Marketing vs. Sales

Most people would not be able to differentiate between Marketing and Sales. To some Sales is Marketing. To others Marketing is the glamorous side, where you create ads and deal with big budgets and spend big money. Sales is the gritty side which deals with customers, their complaints, long travel and uncertain outcomes.

In reality, Marketing and Sales are connected with the vital fact that Sales is the outcome of Marketing. Without sales, the Marketing function only creates brand awareness and creating brand awareness alone is useless until you sell your product, your service or your idea.

Whether you choose to manage your company’s Marketing and Sales functions combined or separate from each other depends on how big each function is. However, you cannot separate the two functions entirely otherwise Marketing will not be able to take action to pull in the customers and Sales may veer off subject when it comes to creation of brand identity.

Marketing creates value for selling; Sales completes the transfer of value.
